Battletech Alpha Strike Counters Pack Review

Image
Th e fantastic releases from Catalyst Game Labs continue. I realize this product has been on the market for a while, but I'd still like to give y'all my review of it. The Battletech Alpha Strike Counters Pack is released by Catalyst Game Labs with an MSRP of $24.99 The set includes: 3 Heavy-stock reference cards of the most commonly used game talbes 6 punchboards, including additional movement markers and trees from the Alpha Strike box, as well as all-new terrain such as reivers and roads, large game templates, and more. A second complete set of the fifteen fold-up cardboard buildings from the Alpha Strike box   The Good: For me, the quick-reference cards have a lot more information displayed compared to the cards that came with the Alpha Strike boxed set. They include tables and references to the Alpha Strike Commander's Edition rulebook. This means you have the critical hit tables for 'Mechs, infantry, and vehicles. More buildings and trees. Not everyone has a larg

Battletech Essentials - My Review

Image
It truly is the Golden Age of Battletech. We have so many new products coming out, not to mention the exceptionally successful Mercenaries Kickstarter. One of the newest products to come out is Battletech Essentials. Battletech Essentials, from Catalyst Game Labs is a new starter set, with an MSRP of $25.  The boxed set incudes: Quick-Start Rules booklet 2 high-quality (unpainted) fully assembled Miniatures. Punchboard, including additional playing pieces as well as terrain 18" x 12: full color, double-sided game map Instant Guide to the Inner Sphere 24 page novella 4 'Mech record sheets 4 MechWarrior cards Solaris VII Arena Map Sheet Rules 2 six-sided dice The Good: For me, I like the focus on Solaris VII, the gaming world. Here, MechWarriors will duel in the arena, seeking fame, fortune, and glory. Solaris VII is a fun place, and for me it hearkens back to MechWarrior IV Mercenaries. The maps and the House stables give that feel for the arena.  You get two new 'Mechs. O

Dealing with Problem Players

I'm a digital packrat. This is something I wrote - a while ago. For the most part it still rings true. Enjoy - and comment please. How to deal with Problem Players. I’ve been DMing/GMing for a while. I’ve run into many types of players. Most are demanding and can provide issues for your games, though they can be amusing as well. It is helpful if you can identify and know how to deal with them. Most gamers will fall into one (or more) of the following categories: *      The Role-Player. This gamer likes to think they are the Olivier or O’Toole of the gaming world. They will write out elaborate stories for their characters, complete with genealogy, family history, and enough detail to make George RR Martin cross-eyed. They live for the social interaction; wanting to know that you have read their background and often will ask little questions “What do you think about my mother’s Ferret . . .” They’ll use accents to differentiate themselves from other players. They don’t a

One D&D - to Rule them All?

Image
So what was supposed to be a semi-regular blog has turned to the occasional blog. Having typed that - there is some news in the TTRPG world! On 8-18-22 Wizards of the Coast (WotC) announced the next version ...uh ....edition ....hmmm ... iteration? of Dungeons and Dragons. Instead of going with a version number (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3.5, 4th, 5th, etc) they are going with One D&D. I can only assume this is a TIP - title in progress. One D&D is set to drop sometime in 2024. Between now and then, WotC will be releasing some rules changes/updates to their Unearthed Arcana website. What's even better - it's all free. You just have to sign up. They plan to release these rules, let players playtest them, and then provide feedback. I think this is great, as the more data that is provided, the more WotC can get the flavor and feel of the new system across. WotC has stated that they will be making One D&D backwards compatible with 5E, but we'll see.  My thoughts? I'll be h

The Return of Battletech

Image
Battletech is one of my favorite franchises. You have a rich and sordid history, filled with heroes, villains, epic battles, betrayals and triumphs, oh and big, stompy robots. Battletech has so many things under its umbrella. Miniatures, video games, novels, even a cartoon. It has risen in popularity and waned over its life. There was a period it was on life support. After the extremely successful kickstarter it is back with a vengeance. One of my earliest memories while living in England, a friend had picked up a copy of 2nd Edition. We didn't know what was going on, but there were maps, dice, and cardboard cutouts of these badass robots. We played, though I know for a fact, not by the rules, but we had fun. When we moved back stateside my next experience with Battletech was through the computer. There was an Infocom 3 pack of the Crescent Hawks Inception, the Crescent Hawks Revenge, and the original Mechwarrior. I beat Inception, couldn't get into Revenge, and spent I don&#

My love/hate relationship with Games Workshop

I started with GeeDub in the mind 90's when Necromunda was out, and 40K had moved from 2nd Edition to 3rd Edition. Like most players, I started a Space Marine army. I'm certainly more of a hobbyist, loving the assembly and painting aspect more than actually playing.  I also had a large Necron force, when they were all metal. You had the options of a Lord, Destroyers, Warriors, and Scarabs.  This is also when the Tau got introduced, and I dove in on them. A blast to assemble, fun to paint, but I sold them off when I was preparing to move to Texas. After the move to Texas, 4th Edition was released The starter set,the Battle for McCragge, was marines vs Tyranids. I had never considered them before, but over I time I had assembled as sizable force of Tyranids. Under Cities of Death rules, my bugs were rough to go against, being a horde army, and if enough models were in cover, the whole brood was in cover. As 4th edition wound down, I started looking into 5th edition, but never pi

First post - why a gaming blog?

I've been a gamer as long as I can remember. I love all kinds of games. Board games. Card games. Video games. Computer games. Miniature games. Table-top Role Playing Games. I honestly have things to say about them, and this gives me a forum to post my ramblings, as well as pictures of various projects.  I don't know how often I'll post. It could be frequent or infrequent, depends on what is going on at the time. As I've been cleaning up my office area I've also come across a lot of old minis that I had forgotten I had. Going through my Google Photos, I've also found a lot of old pictures I had taken, but forgotten I had.  I don't have a real agenda, but I am dragging you along for the ride!
